Algae

Algae are microscopic plants of various colors -- blue, green yellow, blue green, black, brown, red and orange. Most grow in the upper three inches of the soil and add a significant amount of organic matter to the soil.

Algae are NOT the same as moss. As a group, algae seldom cause any problems with soil growing conditions or plants.
