Amelanchier canadensis--Downy Serviceberry
Amelanchier canadensis--Downy Serviceberry
Downy serviceberry is 40 feet tall and can spread 10 to 20 feet. The tree has a fairly rapid growth rate and grows in ordinary garden soil. The main ornamental features are flowers and fall color. The fruits are not as ornamental as the other two traits. The flowers are white and produced with the leaves in spring. The flowers are followed by the purple fruit in late spring or early summer but are often soon eaten by birds. The fall color is orange to red. This amelanchier is suitable for naturalistic plantings and to attract birds. The tree suckers from the base.
