Ironwood tolerates sun or shade and most soils if moist and well drained. The tree reaches a height of 20 to 40 feet and will spread 15 to 20 feet. The muscle-like bark is smooth, gray and fluted. Ironwood has a slow growth rate and is difficult to transplant. Tolerant of pruning, the tree can be used as a hedge plant. The fall color is orange to yellow.
