Heartwood

OHI The editors of Old-House Interiors magazine
Heartwood is a collection of dead xylem vessels making up most of what is classified as a trees or shrub's wood. While the xylem are classified as dead, they still may store some carbohydrates.

Because the center of the plant is composed of essentially dead cells, hollow trees can live for years with little problems.
