Scales of various types will infest twigs. Magnolia scale is the most common scale and can be one half inch across. Overwintering scales are controlled with dormant oil applied in the spring. Crawlers are controlled with sprays of Orthene applied 2 to 3 times, at 7 to 10 day intervals. Sevin or malathion may be used whenever crawlers are present.
