Eastern white pine has soft needles and can grow 100 to 150 feet tall and spread 50 to 60 feet. Growth is rapid at first but slows down with age. White pine prefers a sunny location and tolerates most moist, well drained soils. Eastern white pine is susceptible to salt injury from roads or drain fields.

There are a few cultivars: 'Fastigiata'--nearly columnar habit; glauca--foliage bluish; 'Nana'--a dwarf, compact with short needles; 'Pendula'--weeping; 'Prostrata'--absolutely prostrate.
