Part 1: Tip-Offs to Rip-Offs

The Old House Web

From the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Consumer Protection Division, here are some tip-offs that a contractor is no bargain:

A less-than-reputable contractor:

  1. Solicits door-to-door
  2. Offers you discounts for finding other customers
  3. Just happens to have materials left over from a previous job
  4. Only accepts cash payments
  5. Asks you to get the required building permits
  6. Does not list a business number in the local telephone directory
  7. Tells you your job will be a "demonstration"
  8. Pressures you for an immediate decision
  9. Offers exceptionally long guarantees
  10. Asks you to pay for the entire job up-front
  11. Suggests that you borrow money from a lender the contractor knows. If you're not careful, you could lose your home through a home improvement loan scam.
