If you've got butcher block taste, but a laminate budget, consider Refined Butcherblock, a new offering from Formica.
This faux butcher block, according to the manufacturer, has a wood grain pattern that is intended to look like the real thing. The countertop material is a synthetic laminate with a nonporous, scratch-resistant satin finish.
In October 2004, the material was selling for about $15 per linear foot, less than a third the cost of real butcher block.
