Power Tools: Belt sander for large surfaces

Belt sanders come in a variety of sizes, from very small specialty sanders to heavy pro-models. This Bosch 1275 DVS uses a 3" x 24" belt, so it can be used to sand large, flat surfaces, like a door or cabinet side. But at 12-1/2 lb. its light enough to use vertically.

This model has a variable speed feature, allowing the belt speed to be slowed to 1,150 feet per minute helpful for removing material that can gum up under high heat. The front handle is adjustable, and accessories like a vacuum pickup and a sanding stand improve versatility. The sander cost $210 in September 2004.
