Fixing gaps between moulding and walls

Problem: I have purchased a unique crown molding for my dining room, but the walls are not straight and there are gaps where the moulding butts up with the wall. How can I correct this?

Answer: This is a fairly common problem when trimming out older houses. I'll assume you've nailed into every stud, and that the depressions are between studs. If the gaps are fairly small, say, 3/8'' or less, you can prime the molding and then caulk the gaps before applying your finish coats of paint. If the gaps are larger, you may want to do some work on the walls themselves before putting up your crown molding -- Ken Holmes, OHW publisher.
