Fireplaces: Herringbone brick

Rosemary Thornton, contributing editor
Victorian charmerThis beautiful herringbone firebox may be easier to build that you realize. This firebox arrived at the job site in three sections; two covings (sides) and the fireback. The firebricks measure 9" x 1-1/4" and are laid vertically in a herringbone pattern.

Stone masons at Superior Clay in Ohio cut and lay the brick into a bed of mortar. When it's time for installation, the three prefabricated sections are put into place within the firebox.

A matching herringbone hearth is also available. Firebricks are available in seven colors.
