Hand Tools: Framing square

Scott Gibson, contributing editor
Victorian charmerFew layout tools are as versatile as a full-sized framing square. With a body 24" long and a perpendicular tongue of 16", the square is more accurate than either a combination or speed square for large pieces of lumber or plywood or for checking cabinets and door openings.

It offers a quick way to lay out stair stringers. If you learn how to read the tables inscribed on the body of the square, it will also speed the layout of roof rafters. The body is 2" wide, the tongue 1-1/2". Aluminum is much lighter and easier to use than steel. Sears sold a 16-in. by 24-in. model in September 2004 for about $14.
