This 2-foot level is the box-beam variety long used in Europe and now popular in the U.S. The box beam design - basically a hollow rectangle of light-gauge metal - is light, strong and durable. These German-made levels are substantially more expensive than the economy plastic or aluminum I-beam models available at any hardware or big box store, but are worth the extra dollars. They come with highly accurate vials, a machined top surface and rubber grips that prevent the level from slipping on a wall. If the vial ever loses accuracy, return the level to Stabila for a new one. Model 24640, good for general carpentry, was available on-line in September 2004 for about $50.
