Hand Tools: Hand scraper set

Scott Gibson, contributing editor
Victorian charmerA hand scraper (often called a card scraper) is a simple tool. It's just a rectangular piece of flexible steel with edges that have been very slightly curled over to form a cutting edge.

Often overlooked in favor of power tools, hand scrapers are faster than sandpaper for smoothing hardwood surfaces. They also excel at removing blobs of dried glue and even old paint.

Scrapers are available in several thicknesses. Thinner ones are easier to flex and are capable of taking a finer shaving. Thick scrapers are more aggressive.

This set includes two scrapers 2-1/2" x by 6" and cost $15 in September 2004.
