Fireplaces: Earth Stove fireplace insert

Scott Gibson, contributing editor
Victorian charmerThis wood-burning steel fireplace insert comes with a catalytic converter to lower emissions and a blower kit to circulate warm air -- two big advantages you wont find in a conventional masonry fireplace.

Model BV400C-2 has a maximum heat output of 56,800 BTUs, according to the manufacturer, and can accommodate logs of up to 18 in. long. The 70-lb. firebox capacity should be enough for a burn time of between 8 and 10 hours before refueling.

The EPA-certified stove has an emission rate of 1.9 grams of particulates per hour. It fits in a firebox 21 in. high, 22 in. wide and 16 in. deep. Minimum clearance between the top of the stove and the mantel is 32 in. The insert requires a minimum hearth width of 36 in. In October 2004, the Earth Stove cost about $1,600.
