Fireplaces: A gem of a heater

Victorian charmerFrom the company that produces Waterford Irish Stoves, comes the Emerald gas insert. Designed to work in any existing fireplace, the gas insert produces up to 38,000 BTUs at 82% efficiency, which should be enough to heat up to 2,000 square feet.

The insert also can be installed as a gas fireplace in new construction or a renovation. The Emerald has a glass-front and is available in four colors - matte black, green, brown and blush stone. Optional accessories include a thermostat and a remote control. A variable-speed blower is standard.

The insert weighs 360 lb. In October 2004, the Emerald cost between $2,300 and $2,600, depending on the color.
