Light Bulbs: Compact fluorescent bulb

Scott Gibson, contributing editor
Victorian charmerThis GE soft white bulb has the same shape as a standard incandescent bulb and fits most standard household sockets -- but it's energy-saving fluorescent.

The U.S. Department of Energy suggests that replacing 25% of the lights in high-use areas with fluorescent bulbs can cut energy bills for lighting by 50%. This bulb is available in 40-, 60- and 75-watt equivalents but uses only 11, 14 and 20 watts respectively.

The manufacturer says the bulbs should last up to 5 years and provide between 6,000 and 8,000 hours of service before burning out. This bulb sold for about $6.50 in October 2004.
