Countertop Materials: From Green to you

Rosemary Thornton, contributing editor
Victorian charmerVermont's Green Mountains yield the slate in this countertop. Because it has a nonporous surface it will never need sealing, and it is naturally hygienic and anti-bacterial. Largest size available is 8'0" by 4'6" with a thickness of 1-1/4". Matching backsplashes are 3/4" thick.

A rounded profile is recommended for the countertop's edge, to minimize chipping. Offered in green and black, the price is roughly $55 a square foot, depending on edging and other custom work (November 2004).
