Sanding sponges have a core of foam, allowing them to conform to gentle profiles, but providing a firm backing. Sandblaster sanding sponges from 3M are coated with a blend of aluminum oxide and ceramic aluminum oxide, an extremely tough synthetic abrasive. These minerals should last longer than conventional aluminum oxide.
According to the manufacturer, Sandblaster sponges can be used on bare wood, drywall or metal. They can be used wet or dry, and the sponges can be rinsed out. A coating resists clogging. In December 2004, a 100-grit sponge cost about $3.
