Klingspor's planer belts for portable and stationary belt sanders are made for heavy stock removal. The abrasive is alumina zirconia, an extremely sharp and durable synthetic mineral, which is bonded to a heavy cloth backing. The mineral will last much longer than conventional aluminum oxide, and the belts can be cleaned repeatedly when they become clogged with sawdust. Klingspor makes the belts in nearly a dozen sizes, from 1" x 30" to 6" x 48", and in grits ranging from 24 through 80. All are too rough for final smoothing. In December 2004, an 80-grit 3 in. by 24 in. belt cost about $2.80.
