Hand Tools: Ball pein hammer

Scott Gibson, contributing editor
Victorian charmerNo workshop is really complete without a ball pein hammer, a tool with two striking surfaces, one flat and the other rounded, on opposite ends of the head. This 24 oz. Vaughan ball pein can be used for riveting, center-punching and for shaping soft metals. This hammer has polished strike head, cheeks and pein. Its hollow-core fiberglass handle absorbs shock and is less susceptible to damage than a wood handle. It has a slip-resistant grip. In December 2004, the FS432 2LB sold for about $28.
