Reclaimed Flooring: Pretty Patina

Rosemary Thornton, contributing editor
Victorian charmerModern technology can't duplicate the rich patina of antique wood.

This heart pine flooring is salvaged from old barns and is milled and kiln-dried to kill wood harming insects. The finished product retains its original patina.

Old pine had the benefit of a long, slow groth period, making it more more durable than today's softwoods.

Because this is reclaimed material, finished products will have minor imperfections such as nail holes and other scars.

  • Heart pine flooring in random widths of 3" to 12" is priced at $7.25 to $10.25 per square foot (January 2006).
