Victorian charmerDrawing on artisanry from the 15th Century, this Spanish thermometer is handmade using the "Cuerda Seca" technique.

The glaze is applied to the tile with a syringe and when fired, the glaze beads up giving the tile depth and boldness. Developed in Persia, Cuerda Seca became widely practiced in Spain and eventually appeared in California.
