Antique Lights: Smoke and Bells

The upper shade on this 1870s light fixture is a smoke bell, intended to diffuse smoke that might have wafted from gas glames. But you won't have to worry about smoke any more. The fixture has been modernized and complies with current electric codes.

The lower shade (called a gas harp) is etched with birds and butterflies.

The one of a kind fixture is priced at $1,455 (April 2006).

It measures 30" long x 12-1/2" diameter.
