Door Hardware: Speakeasy

Rosemary Thornton, contributing editor
Victorian charmerKnock, knock. Who's there? Answer the little door before yanking open the big door. Commonly known as a "speakeasy" this unique piece of hardware was popular during prohibition, when people trying to get into illegal saloons had to softly whisper their name through a little door.

This Art Deco reproduction speakeasy has a small door knocker on its front and an exterior grill, with a small slot above for name or house number. Mounting hardware is included.

  • Deco Door Grill Speakeasy Set is $98 (May 2006).
  • Dimensions: 9-3/4" x 5-5/8".
