Wood Flooring: American Chestnut

Rosemary Thornton, contributing editor
Victorian charmerAmerican Chestnut makes for an ideal flooring material, but it's hard to come by. Nearly all of these hardwood trees were killed off by disease in the early 1900s.

Reclaimed from vintage buildings, this Antique American Chestnut lumber is remilled into 13/16" tongue and groove flooring and sold in 2-1/2" to 8-1/2" widths.

Because it is vintage lumber, there may be some imperfections and mended areas, giving it a rustic look.

  • Antique American Chestnut Flooring is $7.70 to $15 per square foot (May 2006).
  • Dimensions: 2-1/2" to 8-1/2" wide x 13/16" thick.
