Vacuums: Trilobite Trails

Rosemary Thornton, contributing editor
Victorian charmerNamed after prehistoric sea creatures that cleansed the ocean's floor, this little robotic vacuum is smarter than it looks. The Trilobite uses sonar to steer clear of obstacles and an infrared sensor keeps it away from steps.

A single charge will keep it going for 60 minutes. When it's time to recharge, the vacuum returns itself to the charger for a two-hour hit of electricty.

Magnetic strips applied to the walls will keep the Trilobite from entering those areas. A backlit LCD display provides information on battery life, programming status, remaining bag capacity and more.

  • Trilobite Automatic Vacuum Cleaner is about $1,600 (June 2006).
  • Vacuum measures 14" x 5".
