A native of Japan, the Red Spider Lily made the perilous crossing to America on board one of the Navy's first ships in the 1850s.
The fall-blooming bulb usually appears after the first rain (or first heavy watering) in September. The Spider Lily's flower is about 10" and is naturally resistant (and unpleasant tasting) to most garden pests.
