Oil Primers: Problem Solver

Rosemary Thornton, contributing editor
Victorian charmerWoods with abundant natural oils, such as redwood, cedar, pine and spruce, naturally resist rot and wood-destroying insects. But the same resins that protect the wood reject paint.

Cabot Problem Solver Oil Primer is designed specifically for oily woods, and can be topcoated with stains or paint.

The primer can also be used immediately on new wood (with moisture content of 15 percent of less), eliminating a weathering period.

Color options are white, gray or neutral base. According to the manufacturer, one coat is usually enough to prepare surface.

  • Cabot Problem Solver Oil Primer is $27 a gallon (July 2006).
