Slate Siding: Like A Brick

Rosemary Thornton, contributing editor
Victorian charmerSlate's properties as a quality roofing material are well-known, but have you ever heard of sculpings? These are blocks of slate that can be used as an exterior siding.

Mined in Vermont, these blocks are generally 8-16" long and 2-7" high and 4-6" deep. Laid like bricks, they're attached to an exterior wall with brick ties to create a stone veneer.

Color options are Unfading Green and Unfading Mottled Green and Purple and Heathermore Gray.

  • Slate Sculpings measure 8-16" long; 2-7" high and 4-6" deep.
  • Prices start at $15 a square foot (September 2006).
