Popular during the 1800s, terne roofs were an alloy of tin and lead. These metal roofs were long-lasting but required regular painting to prevent rust. This 21st Century version of a terne shingle is made of 26 gauge stainless steel with a tin alloy coating and requires no paint or sealant.The interlocking shingles eventually weather to a darker gray. According to the manufacturer, this is not a do-it-yourself project and professional installation is recommended.
