Metal Roofs: No Rust

Rosemary Thornton, contributing editor
Victorian charmerPopular during the 1800s, terne roofs were an alloy of tin and lead. These metal roofs were long-lasting but required regular painting to prevent rust. This 21st Century version of a terne shingle is made of 26 gauge stainless steel with a tin alloy coating and requires no paint or sealant.

The interlocking shingles eventually weather to a darker gray. According to the manufacturer, this is not a do-it-yourself project and professional installation is recommended.

  • Terne Coated Stainless II shingles measure 10" x 14".
  • Price is $750 per square (October 2006).
