While wood is often associated with historic homes, aluminum siding has experienced rapid growth since WWII as clapboard siding or vertical siding.  Aluminum siding suppliers are generally well-established and produce a wide variety of siding styles and complimentary soffits and fascia. Aluminum siding can come finished or can be painted in any color.  It is stable in the heat or cold, and therefore well suited for non-temperate areas.
