Re: Wind-up phonographs, anyone?

I have a 1912 Victor Victrola that still plays beautifully. It was in the house when I bought it, so it became mine. :) I like to crank it up and listen to the old records sometimes, especially when the power goes out and everything is lit by candle or lantern. Makes me smile.

Tips for scrubbing walls without making a big sloppy mess?

Because of all the wallpaper removal, I am going to have a BIG scrub job ahead of me. When I did the dining room I put nonphosphate TSP mix into a spray bottle and scrubbed that way to avoid having water everywhere. It *sort of* worked but it took forever and I had sore hands from continually squirt...

Re: Have you ever created a tool when you couldn't buy one?

That prybar, along with a very thin crowbar, represents the other tools that did not work on my tack strip. That's why I had to file down the putty knife. Let's just say someone really, really, really wanted this tack strip to stay DOWN. Their methods for making sure of this included practically dri...

Have you ever created a tool when you couldn't buy one?

I find myself doing more and more the kinds of things my father did. As I floundered in carpet tack strip he**, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I filed a putty knife to be very thin so it would slide right under with a few taps from a hammer. After that it was an easy matter to piggybac...

Re: question regarding wallpaper removal

I have found stuff like this underneath some of my wallpaper. I think it's sizing of some sort, or canvas that was intended to make it easier to adhere wallpaper. It is a PITA to remove, I remember that!! I very laboriously scraped mine off after soaking the heck out of it. In my case, I felt it nee...

Re: Help deciphering writing underneath wallpaper

The same familiy owned it until I bought it in 2005. I know all the POs' names (I know, I am lucky lucky lucky in that respect!) and none of them even remotely match up.

I will have to see if I've got an infrared setting on my camera....
