Re: Four wire fixture? Weird old house wiring dilemma

More info to add...so I noticed that the wires were all wrapped up with ancient electrical tape. I unwrapped them and discovered - horrors - some weird splices. Two of the black k&t wires were wrapped together as one, then the two black wires for the outlet and the fixture, respectively, were tied t...

Re: Four wire fixture? Weird old house wiring dilemma

The insulation is in very good shape. The outside "fabric-like" covering is a little tattered, but the wrap around the actual wire is intact. Weirdly enough, one of the white wires appeared to be modern, plastic covered white wire. I couldn't figure that one out, it was still covered in the fabric-l...

Four wire fixture? Weird old house wiring dilemma

Hey everyone...been a while since I last posted. Been busy working on the house! One of my recent projects was to replace an ugly old light fixture in my upstairs hallway with a new and improved one. Thought this would be easy. OF COURSE IT"S NOT! This fixture happens to still be on knob and tube, a...

Re: How to fix previous owner's paint job?

I had the same problem in my office. Not only was the paint job dark orange gloss (not a huge fan), they glopped paint on the ceiling, floor, baseboards and everywhere else. There were drips, hair, pieces of scotch tape, dents in the wall (also plaster), bad patches - it was REALLY bad and the gloss...

Re: hurricane lamps

Oh rcnx...you just reminded me about my trip to New Orleans and Pat O'Briens and their hurricanes! So tasty, before I knew it I had two and two big beers and that was the end of me. The whole next day it was like a hurricane blew through my gastric system! Oh Lord!

Re: WWOHWD?

Yeah, after living with it for a couple of days, it's not THAT bad. I was able to tuck it under the baseboards a bit on the one side of the room (no quarter round trim). The other side of the room includes an added closet, so not as much room under the baseboards. It doesn't look too bad.

WWOHWD?

I finally (after a week - almost 2) am putting the finishing touches on my guest room. There was a roughly cut carpet remnant nailed...not kidding...NAILED to the floor in that room over a pad. We just ripped it out tonight. I had purchased an area rug at the blue box store and we unroll it, to find...

Re: skim coating and painting

Thanks for the advice all - I am priming the whole room. As I'm typing, I notice that primer really does stick...especially to my fingers. I don't seem to have gotten it all off in the shower!

skim coating and painting

Well, I took four days off work to work on the house, and supposedly to relax. I was planning on painting the guest room, but painting turned into stripping wallpaper and skim coating. (Thankfully, the painted over wallpaper I found was only on one wall and came down without much of a fight). I've n...

I am in love with this bed

I have been looking for a daybed for my spare bedroom, specifically one with a pop up trundle, since it's a narrow room (9' wide x 10' long). I am in love with this bed. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j258/cloveu/tremontbed.jpg The company says they can make any of their twins into a daybed - the...
