Hey old pals!
I just stopped by today and was sorry to see that what evidently was a war with spammers has left the place nearly deserted. My house is turning 150 this year, and I have made my peace with what I was able to do for it. I'm feeling OK and keeping busy helping my parents, and hope to stop by again so...

Re: New Lincrusta design Passeri RD 1971
I had one other idea: Find burlap or other fabric to replicate the background, then somehow produce the foliage elements and lay them in place. I have even less idea of how this would work than I did about my first idea. Finally, you could just use the aforementioned fabric to fill in plain panels a...

Re: New Lincrusta design Passeri RD 1971
First of all, wow, that new design is gorgeous. Secondly, yes and no, there is not a chance of having a custom design run, unless you're willing to pay to have the machinery created for it (rollers or whatever they use). I bet they would, but I'm imagining it would cost many thousands of dollars. Th...

Re: What is this gadget? in 1910-ish photo
Thank you very much, folks. I agree that it appears to be a doctor's office. It's got certificates and books, but no lawyer needs a sink. Do you know, I think that little appliance attached to the mystery box over the sink is soap on a rope!?! Perhaps the glass-and-hose arrangement is for getting li...

What is this gadget? in 1910-ish photo
This is not my photo; I just ran across it while cruising for historic-house photos on Flickr. On the wall there is what looks like a glass tumbler connected to a long hose and sitting in a bracket, like a tooth-brushing glass in a bathroom. The bracket possibly is able to be set at one of several h...

Re: Mystery Compartment in the Floor?????
But Warren, we're not done theorizing yet! I personally know that the city Traffic Control department makes octagonal cuts in the street when they service the stoplights. I'm pretty sure that's what it is.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
Wondering about Harkin and his wife & twins, as well as Kristin. DH's mom left Staten Island to stay upstate with family, don't know how her house fared. I'm fine in the Midwest, but was suitably impressed by the fact that the weather system reached us too, a thousand* miles away. *I actually have n...

Re: New Here - Can anyone ID this heater?
The foundation on this house is one of the topics I will probably also ask about as it is crumbling (river silt does not equal sand when trying to build basement walls) so there is a good chance we will be able to get down there with some heavy duty equipment to remove it. That's looking on the bri...

Re: Possible rental purchase. What home style is this??
There are two styles happening here: the fireplace and front door are Craftsman in its earlier years, and the facade Italianate as mentioned. I'm charmed by the whim which placed such an up-and-coming style of door in a more classic facade. I wish I could see it with the eyes of the original owner. ...

Re: Garage Before And After
UPDATE Nothing has been done. The summer was wasted going in circles between the building department, consultants, the insurance company, and heck knows who else. God bless my mother for undertaking most of the phone calls, etc. As mentioned, the structural work shown at the beginning of this thread...
