Re: Ice Dam Problem, Foyer Leak
A good quick fix is to remove the snow with a snow rake. Around here many who have gotten their roofs redone in recent years are opting to put down metal squares for the last row before the gutters. The snow won't stick to the metal, slides off and keeps damns from forming.

Re: Circuit breakers tripping
Go look at your fuse box. See what the name on the box is. If it's Federal Pacific that is probably your problem. A electrician friend of mine warned me that in the trade those boxes are called fire starters. If you have one get it replaced ASAP.

Re: Old House Style
Your house with the exception of the where the doors is and the eyelash type window is very close to looking like mine on the exterior. I think the side front door and the eyelash window are regional additions/changes to the style especially since you are finding other homes in the area with a simil...

Re: Tile and wallpaper Q's concerning bathrooms
I have wallpaper in three of the five bathrooms. Most of it was put up in the 70's and is sticking extremely well. It's going to take a steamer to remove it when I get to it. No exhaust fan in any of the baths. As for tile. I'd go with glazed. It cleans better and is resistant to stains. After you g...

Re: Old House Style
It's a mutt. It has many of the ear marks of a Federal style house but I think it was started way before that.Rebuilt most likely, could have gone thru some growing pains due to either fire or a larger family taking it over. NOT every house fits neatly into a particular period. Many times their were...

Re: Is my siding Original?
Your siding is probably original. The reason it is different from other houses could be it's age. It could very well have been built BEFORE the other houses on the street. If you look at the towns history you might see that there were other houses there at the same time yours was built. They should ...

Re: Two choices. Both need work. Which one?
I like the first on better. It to me has more character..........I may be bias since I own a 1830's house. It's really hard to say which is going to cost less down the road. Many times you don't see the really big stuff till AFTER you are in the house awhile. What looks like it will work for your li...

Re: Happy Valentine's Day
DH and I have been married 30 years. Seems just like yesterday we were on our first date. Three kids, four long distant moves and three grandkids later were still smiling.........least most of the time. It's been a wild ride so far!

Re: Oh dear -did we teach our DD nothing?
At least your DD has a house with doors! You should have seen the place my DD had us come look at last year! OMG!!!! I'm all for seeing a houses potential but even this one had me a bit worried. It was three floors of industrial size mistakes. Not something a first time home owner with a small budge...
