Re: Wrong place for a dryer vent?

That probably is not a problem as long as the bottom plate doesn't rot. You might consult a structural engineer for his opinion to be sure. Some citys have codes that specify how large & where a hole can be drilled thru structural lumber.

Re: Need help with living room lights

I see your problem with the wall sconces; but I'm not a fan of ceiling lights in living rooms. The sconces on either side of the fireplace make sense. How about installing some switch controlled outlets & using floor or table lamps as you suggest? My living room has outlets along the walls where one...

Re: Squeaky Floors with New support columns

I wonder if the joists or beams the rest on the new columns are flexing enough to rub on the tops of the columns? Perhaps a shim of felt paper placed between the top of the column & the beam or joist might eliminate the squeeks. You might ask your installer. If you can replicate the squeeks & creaks...

Re: insulating double brick walls on the inside - yes or no?

I've seen a stone house done with interior insulation & I live in one without. My house remains comfortable year round without insulated exterior walls. A friend's home had 2x4 walls constructed & insulated against the original stone & plaster walls. That also seemed to work but that made his rooms ...

Re: Old updated house. Is it worth it???

All good suggestions; if the sills need replacing that may not be too big a job but I would get some estimates so you know where you stand. The suggestion about donating papers to the historical society relates to any historical information relating to the house; past owners etc.

Re: Repairing an old garage

I would try to avoid attaching anything to your stone foundation & work at replacing what ever part of your sill that needs it. I had rotted sills on a spring house workshop. I jacked up the building in various spots & replaced the 4x4 sills as needed then set the building back down on the sill. The...

Re: How to Refinish an Exterior Wood Door

Yes, if spar varnish holds up on boats it ought to stand up to weather on your door. One question, do you have a storm door over your wood door? If so the intense heat buildup may also contribute to the baking of your finish.

Re: Enamel over cast iron kitchen sink (and some house info)

Restructuring the wall is probably the best idea & a larger opening into the other room might be even better as well. Good luck with the plumbing too!
