Another Storm Window Project
After having the storm window sales guys come to my house a few times over a couple years I have decided to build my own wooden storms due to lack of color choice, the undesirable look and the price of aluminum triple tracks. I'm actually refurbishing the entire window because I can't put this off a...

Re: Closet Door Suggestions Needed
Thanks for the ideas guys. If pocket doors were the way to go I could build the wall, but I'm still undecided. Either way, I'll be taking off that plywood. Might be left open for now until I get the rest of the room finished. I'm getting tired of the living room as bedroom.

Re: Outdoor security lighting for old houses...
Thanks for this post. I completely agree with zero selection for outdoor lighting with an added motion sensor. Ugly is the word. And nothing cheap seems to look decent to me either.

Closet Door Suggestions Needed
Thanks for stopping by. The second floor in this house has been redone over the years. The re-muddle upstairs layout isn't terrible- probably almost the best one could do with the space available. (Lets not talk about ripping out all the plaster to put in a crappy drywall job that I'm still fixing- ...

Victorian Art Deco?
I've been looking around for some new lighting. I see on Ebay that many of the lights up for grabs are called "Victorian Art Deco." Or they take it a step further with "Art Deco Victorian Nouveau." Please correct me if I am wrong, but aren't these very different styles? What gives? Is this because p...

Re: Remove and Replace Attic Insulation
New/old construction doesn't matter, the same building principles apply. If it is used properly, like any other type of insulation, it will perform for many years, but it is not a wonder cure for every problem and can't bypass the rules. Through my searches, seems to me that even the "experts" can'...

Re: Remove and Replace Attic Insulation
Again about spray foam. I really do like the idea of the stuff even if the cost is high, but I still wonder about how long it lasts- does it break down? Say I live in this house forever...will I need to dig the stuff out from between the joists in 25 years so I can re-insulate? It seems to have a lo...

Re: Remove and Replace Attic Insulation
Is there really any value to getting rid of the existing insulation I think fiberglass is there throughout the entire space, but I didn't go that far back. The fiber fill insulation is on top of it. The fiberglass has been scrunched down. I am aware that R value is considerably altered unless the f...

Re: Remove and Replace Attic Insulation
Where are you located? I'm in Minnesota. According to this chart, I would need anywhere from R49-R60 if I take all the old stuff out: http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=home_sealing.hm_improvement_insulation_table I just had all the old insulation sucked out of my attic and replaced with new. Ho...

Re: Remove and Replace Attic Insulation
Thanks for your responses. It would only be a "living space" in the idea that the temperature would be comfortable to walk up there for any length of time. I understand what you're saying about the load bearing potential of the floor joists. I'm not looking to convert into another room, just a clean...
