Re: 1910 house, the work begins
Here's another sample: http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5223/5779869847_6733a4754d_z.jpg Probably your house had similar hoods over the windows prior to the siding and replacements - key cool element,. This one the porch is hidden by the trees - but you can clearly see the double brackets - the paint c...

Re: 1910 house, the work begins
Well, call it what you want, but to my eye - it's Italianate. Putting it built round about 1870-1880. Paired brackets under the eaves, the heavy decorative brackets under the porch - we have nearly the same house in Ypsilanti. I wish I could find a picture of it to show you - but here's some reasona...

Re: Painting- body color suggestions please
What I learned when trying to decide what to paint our house was the Victorians loved nature, and they strongly felt that the house should be a part of nature, ergo, the house colors were that of the natural world. Neutral - not so much - as one wouldn't think my dark green as neutral as in today's ...

Re: pump for original well...
Do a local search for a well guy. They can come and set it up so you have a pressure tank, a pump, and a spigot to which you'll attach your hose(s). We still have our well that served our house prior to the "city" water coming thru (Thank God). We use it to water all the outside stuff - and there's ...

Both houses are terrific. Good luck! BTW - the wallpaper in the hall with the red carpeting? My mom has that exact paper in the 1/2 bath in her VA house! It is still pretty - but was a complete bugger to put up - like tissue paper - I imagine it will be the same coming down some day!

Re: Need help with an Architectural Term
Oh, the aging mind! How about Belvedere or Porte Cochere? Took me YEARS to remember those things. And I'm not sure I really remember them, or the path worn to the part of my brain in which I keep these terms has gotten worn a bit and it is easier to follow! Gads.

Re: A new Project - the next generation! Help!! UPDATE!
Well, the doors are all done and painted with their finish coat - they look handsome. The locks came out just fine, and DH actually fixed the locking mechanism and then toured every lock smith and store in town to find skeleton keys to fit - and did find them so they're installed and the locks all w...

Re: Speaking of old schools
This was done in Ypsilanti Michigan - next community over to me (old Alma mater of EMU!) with an old high school: http://yhf.org/hometour/2002/index.html Turned into senior apartments - but they kept a lot of the old features of the classrooms intact. Turned out terrific! Even the old water fountain...

Re: Interesting day
James - terrific story! That happened twice to me over the 34 yrs I've been here - one was a renter - the other was a descendant from the original owner/builder. Was very cool. You'll remember that always. And the best part for those folks that stopped by, was the old place was in loving hands and b...
