Re: Beware of VintageDoors.com

You might get better feedback if you discuss the actual issues you had with the company instead of complaining about online reviews. Manipulation of online reviews is common. I'm not saying it's right but take any reviews with a grain of salt. If you had some specific issues with quality, service or...

Re: Moving in and getting to work - Old farm house

Is it possible for old linoleum to have asbestos? I hear all the time about old tile but never linoleum. If it's linoleum then it does not have any asbestos. Real Linoleum was made from a jute backing with linseed and other natural ingredients but no asbestos. Thar being said, the adhesives used de...

Re: Foundation Question - Eastern NC

I would get a structural engineer to look at the house and give you a recommendation. Contractors are OK but if there is a possibility of some major structural issues don't risk it. Get someone knowledgeable to look at the situation.

Re: Help Identify Style

I wouldn't call it a colonial revival. I don't see the colonial elements. I leaning more toward a folk Victorian but I suck at identifying styles. You try asking at http://www.thehistoricdistrict.org/ or http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/oldhouse to see if you can get an answer there. BTW, it looks li...

Re: Beadboard Ceiling in living room

I think it's up to you if you want to invest the time and effort to restore the ceiling. I discovered some bead board in the ceiling in one of my rooms and I decided to restore it. I'm very happy I did. That being said working on the ceiling is tough. If it was me, I'd repair the bad spots and repai...

Re: No "subfloor" only red pine? *QUESTIONS*

It was common for some houses to only have the finished floor and not a sub-floor and the finish floor. You should be able to install new HW floors over the old pine floor make the pine floor as the sub-floor. I'd probably put some vapor barrier or something similar down between the two floors to mi...

Re: New member-Craftsman in Santa Cruz Mtns with doorknob qs

I had a similar issue with some cover plates on a brass lockset. I could not find any replacement screws for some that had been lost. In desperation I stopped at a local locksmith shop and he had piles of the screws in his inventory. He gave me a couple complimentary. In hind site I should have just...

Re: 1924 Dutch Colonial Floors - Heart Pine or Doug Fir?

I looked at the pictures and said to myself the two on the right were doug fir. Reading the rest of the post I saw that I was way off. I really don't know what the original floors are since I guessed so wrong. A lot depends on the area of the country you are. West coast sees more doug fir and the ea...
