Re: installing original subway 2x4.....

well guys i am still in the getting started mode. ranger is right, the tiles wer set on concrete, but popped right off in a stroke of luck. the only problem may be the cap ( with beautiful egg and dart detail) which has concrete stuck to most. i have decided to use thinset, since it is a good applic...

Re: House numbers

i still don't have house numbers after 6 years, which is truly dangerous if you need an ambulance, fire or police call. i will put mine on the transom over the front door, probably in black with a contrasting lighter highlight. my worry is that with the light out in the vestibule it will be impossib...

still endlessly re-pointing

i am reconciled to the notion that i will never finish the re-pointing. the work i was kind of arbitrarily starting on the south side of the house has moved to the rear or east yard. one of the only real rains we have had this summer pretty well washed out enough mortar for me to kick into doing tha...

Re: Old House Pets

just dropping in to let you guys know that our doxie daisy lost her battle with congestive heart failure. the meds kept her happy and well for nine months but eventually caused renal failure. we put her to sleep @ two months ago. she was with us for nearly 19 years. our last barn kitty, sylvia, died...

Re: Rebuilding a window sill and jambs.

checked out your blog also. don't paint your trim! TOH is bunk and has lost the OLD moniker. you can refresh your historic shellac. SO glad to see you are both green and SMART. the "greenest" thing to do with old windows is to repair them. i see you are in a quandry about how to restore your upper s...

Re: Historic district and Lead Paint

i will never understand the level of fear-mongering which some people fall for with regard to lead. just taking the OP seriously for a moment, do you not realize that the removal ( of valuable and viable old growth lumber which is historically irreplaceable) will almost certainly cause the dreaded p...
