Re: Waxing Wood Floors?
You could use BLO, but one thing to keep in mind is that if you ever want to use another finish you will need to make sure it's compatible with an penetrating oil on the wood.

Re: Insurance Question- Replacement Value
My question is, if your house burned to the ground would you honestly rebuild it using using the same type of materials (i.e. old growth wood, etc.) or would you find another comparable bungalow in town and buy it at the going rate. If the answer is the latter, then you don't need full replacement t...

Re: Waxing Wood Floors?
I grew up in a house w/ waxed wood floors. Pretty easy. Clean the floors w/ mineral spirits to get off old gunk. Put down some paste wax (SC Johnsons & Butchers both make a nice paste wax). My mom owned a buffer machine, but you can rent them, Buff the wax until it has a nice sheen. Done. Walk caref...

Re: cistern in back yard
There's a pipe coming out of it pointing to the house that's been cemented. I don't see anything in the basement that it could have been attached to and the house has had public water for a long time. I'll try to get more pics tomorrow. I'll probably put a deck over it but I'm curious about how big...

Re: Remodeling our Kitchen in an old
Granted my stove is gas, but it is 3" away from my sink. I'd do a little research on your local requirements and when a change tips you into pulling things up to code. Your city website should have info. (I think this is usually regulated at city level) I had a concrete guy who insisted that if I ha...

Re: Replacing windows - saving the originals from the dumpster!
I actually agree with window salesman to a degree. There are many well constructed windows out there - Anderson, Pella and Marvin all make solid lines of windows. They are perfectly appropriate in new construction and those companies are probably making some of the best. My parents have Anderson win...

Re: Sink leg question
My dream it to some day own a pink fixture bathroom.
I think some of those holes are just for the ceramic/porcelain creation process and don't serve an actual purpose once the sink it out of the kiln.

Re: Transform 1951 cape to a bungalow
I believe the insulation is fully encased. When I look at the insulation from in the house/attic it has paper on the inside also. The box is the kitchen vent fan that is mounted on the wall. Then, I'd personally suspect that there was a loose joint in the vinyl that allowed water to seep underneath...

Re: Transform 1951 cape to a bungalow
Is that the insulation vapor barrier we see? Looks to me like it's facing the wrong direction (i.e vapor barrier should be on the "conditioned" side). Could this have cause a "situation"??
