Anyone know about variable speed motors for central a/c???

Finally, we're able to install central air in this old house and the cost is plenty, but for an extra $700 we can get a variable speed motor in the air handler. The a/c guy tells me that this adds another full point to the SEER rating and is also a nice feature to have in an old dusty house. This ho...

Major score...

Thanks for all the responses! This is awesome.

Just this morning, I found a photo of my house from 1948. It was in the file at the city's appraiser's office.

My halloween decorations

For halloween, I was just going to put a nice reddish light in the attic, with perhaps a looped recording that says only, "GET OUT NOW...." ala Amityville Horror. :) http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w112/melly1953/amityvillewdw.close.jpg http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w112/melly1953/amityville...

How many bathrooms does it take? And how many do you have?

In the pre-1900s forum, there's a five-page thread about bathrooms and over there, someone made the very interesting observation that we Americans have a bathroom fetish. When the hubby and I looked at a 1950s four-bedroom brick ranch with two full baths, we were told the house needed a third bathro...

I need, I need...to see pics of your home's exterior!

I've been poking around here, looking for a thread that is dedicated to people showing off pictures of their home's exterior. I haven't found it yet. I noticed there's a thread about HOW to post photos, but there aren't that many photos actually posted there. Did I miss it? Or should we start a new ...

yard sales

I hit the jackpot at the yardsales on Saturday, finding not only a fireplace screen (old, but functional and period appropriate), but solid brass andirons dating back to the 1920s and a nice antique mirror for the front hallway. Also found this fireplace fan (see photo) which I'm not sure what to do...

Poo-poo heads

No, it says, "no miscreants or hooligans allowed!"

It's abbreviated down to "ADT".

flipping out over flippers

I hope I live long enough to see what fate befalls the building materials in common use today. Things like the crummy replacement windows, vinyl siding installed over foamboard, with only OSB at the home's corners. Or my favorite, the 2x4 studs that are so twisted and warped, drywall installers can ...

Friends don't let friends flip old houses...

We're still recovering from this home's near-flip experience. The evil-doers had started to flip the house but thanks to a sinking real estate market, got out (and sold to us!) before they could do too much damage. It's heart-breaking to see the damage done in this community by people who think they...
