Re: When it is this cold.......
James, you are a good man :) It was 5° here last night and 11° the night before. The goats are puffy and all fuzzed up and the ducks, god bless their tiny brains, are indignant at what has happened to their pond. They went out 2 days ago, marched down to the water's edge and then stopped short, star...

Drafts between floor and shoe molding?
We've got some spots that are leaking cold air between where the floorboards meet the wall and the quarter-round meets the floor. Best to pull up all the quarter round and seal behind it or can I get away with using clear caulk on those areas?

Re: Window Restoration Class - Minneapolis
Our local community college here is offering a whole series of historic preservation four day workshops... They've drawn students from two states...The masonry class was good and they brought in some good instructors from Williamsburg and Virginia Limeworks. Arrgghh! I'd love to have something like...

Re: What's the dumbest thing you've done - to your house?
Where to start? The most aggravating mistake was only stripping the woodwork to an even surface before repainting. The original paint is a gray-blue paint. The second layer is a burgundy paint (milk paint? Oxblood? Paint from hell?) which has bled a delightful orangy color through 2 coats of oil-bas...

Re: What do you use your Dremel for?
I've used it for sanding small areas around stair posts, drilling holes in plywood for the bases of Williamsburg-style Christmas decorations, and trimming the goats' horns

Re: There must be a better way to strip these stairs
Thanks guys. After fiddling around for so long, I think I'll sand them. It'll be much faster as well.

There must be a better way to strip these stairs
I've been putting off stripping the treads on our stairs for, oh, two years now. I've been able to get most of the paint off with my speedheater, but the last layer (the original paint?) is proving to be a bear. I don't know what kind of paint it is, but it's a deep burgundy that's impervious to spe...

Venn, it's beeyoutiful! Worth every bad word you said (or thought):) I'm jealous. Who knows when we'll be able to get to our frightful bathrooms.
Your tile work in both bathrooms looks fantastic, and I love the colors you used. Do you mind sharing the color in your third floor bath?
