Re: 1918 Wood Siding Dismay
Consider leaving the wood siding in place and putting vinyl over it. If you have the siding removed, you have to go through all of the EPA silliness (and huge costs) regarding lead paint abatement. Siding over it, you don't have to. Also, at some point in the future, a new homeowner may want to rest...

Re: How to Refinish an Exterior Wood Door
You might want to consider a spar varnish...they're meant for exterior use. The higher volume of oil in spar varnish gives it more flexibility, so it should be able to deal with the elements better.

Re: What's happened to our board?
The problem is that the "spammers" are actually bots that create these accounts automatically. There's not a whole lot you can do to block them, unless you can enable some sort of system (like a CAPTCHA or something else) that requires a human to answer. I work in IT for a living and maintain a numb...

Re: The End of An Era -- sad sad sad
I won't argue the fact that there are some materials in our old houses that simply can't be obtained anymore (like old growth lumber). This does not, however, mean that everything produced today is utter garbage. Mass housing developments use "contractor-grade" (ie: cheapest available) materials eve...

Re: Granitine?
I had one of those sinks until a few months ago when it finally gave up the ghost and had to be replaced. It's simple concrete, not granite.

Re: Help with Condensation on Windows
The glass has warmth on one side, cold on the other. That makes the glass cold, and that causes the moister air inside the house to condense on the inside of the glass. No amount of weatherstripping that window is going to fix that. You want an air gap between the outside air and the inside air to p...

Re: Faux quartersawn oak?
The thing of it is that the sanded wood looks like raw white oak to me. Raw wood can have a drastically different appearance than something with a finish on it....even a single coat of oil can make a huge difference. If you have a largish area that's been sanded, try wiping the raw wood down with mi...

Re: Kitchen Range reccomendations
One thing to keep in mind regarding Kenmore appliances is that you can determine who actually makes the product in question by looking at the model number. IIRC, the first two digits identify the company who makes the product. A little Googling should produce a list of numbers and their correspondin...

Re: Dampness where floor meets wall in basement
What are the chances that the basement floor isn't quite level, and water table is right underneath it? The low spot of the floor is at table level and gets damp, while the rest of the floor is just above the table level and remains dry? I have that issue with my house, and just keep the dehumidifie...
