Parging compacted soil in basement

Our basement has some areas where the builders left the undisturbed soil in place and parge over it. Over the years, some of the parging has fallen off. Do you have any recommendations as to what I should use to patch it and how to do it? Some areas are pretty big, and there are both vertical and ho...

Back Issues of OHJ and Victorian Homes

Hey Gang, Just thought I'd let you know I'm selling my back issues of Old House Journal and Victorian Homes on ebay, including a complete set of the original OHJ from 1973 to 1985. Here's a link to the listings. Moderator: If you feel this listing is inappropriate, you can remove it. I'll understand...

Re: Turning an old door into a pocket door

There are pocket door pulls that go where the backplate was. They have a recessed portion, so you would need to make a hole in the door to accomodate it. I've done it. It's not hard, but yes, you do carve up the door a bit more than it already is. Look for antique pulls. Using the old backplate with...

As a matter of fact, I did. It was my first time using our new kitchen and range after our year-long kitchen remodeling project. I was in heaven!

Re: Talk to me about modern gas ranges...

Oh yeah, regarding the Kenmore Elite I mentioned, it has the grates across the top, which I find very handy, and it has a warming drawer, which I don't use except for storing pans. I did try to use it once and got a horrible chemical smell. Upon investigation, I found that the spatter shield I had b...

Re: Talk to me about modern gas ranges...

We got a Kenmore Elite Dual Fuel back in 2007 that I really like. Gas top and electric convection oven. The convection oven isn't the miracle they would have you believe, but it does reduce cooking time and improve results in many cases, especially with meats. It's certainly better than a gas oven. ...

Re: Victorian Hearth Tile

Okay, 6 years later, I think we're ready to tackle this and probably have a good tile source or two. But can anyone recommend an installer in the Twin Cities area? If I search the yellow pages or whatever, I get mostly handymen. We'd like a specialist.
