jeff you did a amazing job i just love those built-ins!!! i would like to put something like that in my house. did you already know how to make them or did you get some "plans" from someone? and Queen Anne Victorian your dining room is beautiful i love that wall paper is it origional?

muneca509 - I'm glad you like the paper, it's new and I hung it a little over two years ago. I saw it online and snapped it up without even ordering a sample. I am proud to say that of all of the rooms we have tackled in our house, the dining room is the only one I can say is 100% finished! Well, except for the trim that always needs touching up due to my kids and dogs...

muneca509 - to answer your question, I never really use plans, but I may use concepts from them occasionally. I've seen similar built-ins in other old houses. I also searched one of my favorite resources http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections ... index.html for pictures and drawings from my area to keep the appropriate details. I used to make more furniture until I bought this house to restore. The house keeps me pretty busy. Some of my previous pieces are the dining room table and mirror on the wall in the pictures.

What can I say about our dining room? The lamp came with the house. None of the woodwork had ever been painted (thank goodness). We had the floors (lightly) refinished when we moved in. This room was in pretty good shape, only requiring some patching and paint. We matched the existing color -- a hard to describe pale green -- and friends who come over FREAK OUT because it's the color of their grandparents' homes.

The dining room set is (probably) a 1950s repro Colonial, which seems fine for the eclectic decorating styles of the 1920s. My research suggests that homes of this era mixed furniture and decor from a range of historical periods. You can just barely see my antique spinning wheel against the wall. The rug is an antique Iranian (Persian) tribal rug, that we bought from a rug collector last weekend.

And then, there's our late 40s kitchen....

Our house is pretty modest, which suits us just fine. We live in a sweet 1920s neighborhood in Oakland California. Very working-class. Wonderful neighbors. We love it.

Honestly, I never thought we would ever be able to afford to buy a house in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I still can't believe our good fortune.
