The Boards are now back open...

Post by Schag »

I've reactivated the boards for new users.
I am also at the end of my rope trying to moderate all by myself.

Please let me know if anyone might be interested in gaining Moderator access.
I'm really only doing this out of habit and really no longer care if this board gets eaten up by spammers.
I have received no support from QuinStreet, the owners of this site.

Schag, I see you cleaned all the spam up again. Thank you for trying to keep things going.
It's a shame that the owner is absent and left you trying to clean up the mess! :(

Could you set the user activation policy to require admin/mod approval? That way, the spammers won't be able to get in over the weekend when you're away. It's probably much easier to approve new users (the fake ones will normally be quite obvious) rather than having to delete the spam accounts.
That would be an even bigger headache than getting rid of spam, and you still don't always know if they are spammers or not.
I'm only staying around until the next big attack. (There were over 3000 during SpamFest 2012)

You can plug potential new users into stopforumspam.com and it will tell you if it's a known spammer (by IP or email address). Doesn't catch brand new ones, but does catch a lot.

That's how I keep new spam users off my board.

Also pays to delete any accounts that registered, but haven't logged in at least once. They are sleeping spam accounts.

I would be happy to volunteer for moderator status, I am disabled and don't work and I am on the computer about 12 hours a day. Let me know if you want me to try to help. I am over at the other forum too but I like this one.

I can't stay logged in now.
I think the board is broke.
That's it...I'm done.
Good luck everybody.

I hit the register button today by accident instead of the login, and noticed that registration required typing in a code. Is that something new?

Too bad the spam got so bad. Some of us have been spending time at the new community for folks with a love of old houses at wavyglass.org

Hi everyone,

We are aware of the spam problem and working to fix it. We are very proud of this site and these forums and we will continue to invest in maintaining this site as a useful resource for old house enthusiasts. We appreciate your patience as we upgrade spam protection, we hope to have this complete by mid-March.

Sincerely,

The Old House Web
