Arched Hall Entrance - Structural or 1938 Design?

Post by lauren2747 »

I live in a small,1938 stone house. There is a full basement, 3 rooms on the main floor and two bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on the second floor. An additional bedroom is over the attached garage but the wall between the main structure and the garage is solid brick on both levels.

There is an arched entrance to the short upstairs hallway. It is the only arch in the house. It's pretty much in the center of the house. Since the house also has a Vermont slate roof, I was wondering if the arch was for structural support, or if it is simply a 1938 design feature.

Thanks.
