Can anyone tell me what this is?
My house was built in 1930. In the basement stairwell is this "opening". It is 7"x7". It runs through the closet above into the roof. I'm unsure if it went through the roof at one time. Thank you so much.

Is the whole thing sheet metal?
Is it a 90 degree bend in a duct?
Might just be a decorative element to soften the corner or it could be a bumoer formed out of the sheet metal to prevent people from banging their head on a sharp corner if it’s somewhere where you might be able to walk into it…
